We are pleased to announce that Darren Wong, MD, was recently appointed to the rank of Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, retroactive to July 1, 2024. Dr. Wong joined UPMC and the Division of Infectious Diseases in 2023 at the rank of Visiting Clinical Associate Professor. Dr. Wong has a record of clinical excellence in providing high-quality clinical care. He manages the care of patients of high complexity, a significant proportion requiring multidisciplinary orthopedic and plastic surgery care.
Dr. Wong’s current research focuses on multi-drug resistant gram-negative bacterial infections. He has a particular interest in carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, specifically their epidemiologic risk factors and optimizing therapeutic strategies. He was previously the site principal investigator for the National Institutes of Health/Antibiotic Resistance Leadership Group (NIH/ARLG) CRACKLE and MDRO multi-center studies which investigated the resistance mechanism and epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant bacteria and compared different regional prevalence. While at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, he was selected to improve care coordination between orthopedic surgery and infectious diseases. Through this collaboration, Dr. Wong gained a reputation as a regional expert in prosthetic joint infection and limb salvage.
Dr. Wong is a strong addition to the Division of Infectious Diseases. His experience as a dedicated clinician, educator, and mentor have been an asset to every institution in which he has previously served. He is committed to continue his work at the University of Pittsburgh as an academic researcher. Dr. Wong displays excitement about new opportunities with the ID Division and he will continue to make important contributions to the academic mission in the field of infectious diseases.
Please join us in congratulating Darren!
