Laboratory Manager – 24004644
Dr. Rinaldo Lab (Pitt Men’s Study)

The Division of Infectious Diseases, Men’s Health Study is recruiting for a Laboratory Manager. The incumbent must have extensive knowledge and experience in cell culture techniques and complex assays, including singlex/multiplex soluble marker testing, EliSpot, and preparing research samples for flow cytometry analysis. Must have experience in ordering and maintaining laboratory inventories. Training in Dangerous Goods Shipping and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) is expected. Will perform routine flow cytometry on clinical specimens, including performing QC on various machines and taking part in testing proficiency programs. Will be responsible for interacting with sales representatives and service technicians for machines with service contracts, as well as insuring service plans are renewed on time.

Job Summary

Acts as operational laboratory manager to oversee general day-to-day operations and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and protocols. Evaluates new products, negotiates vendor prices, and instructs staff and researchers in quality control and proper procedures.

Essential Functions 

This position requires a high level of mobility, manual dexterity, logistical/organizational planning, visual acuity, and basic computer skills.

Physical Effort 

This position requires that the applicant travel between laboratories, campus buildings, and to sit or stand at a laboratory bench for extended periods of time.

 Research Recruiter and Outreach Specialist – 24006665
HIV/AIDS Program

This position is for a research recruiter and outreach specialist in the Division of Infectious Diseases, HIV/AIDS Program. Under the supervision of faculty Investigators and Research Program Manager, the candidate will work with clinical staff to identify potential research participants, interface with medical providers, and contact potential participants to discuss study participation. The candidate will work with clinical staff to schedule and retain research participants. This candidate will participate in all aspects of planning and implementation of clinical trials and may assist with study visits as needed.

Key Job Duties Include but are not limited to:

  • Complete medical record reviews to identify eligible patients.
  • Meet with medical providers to discuss eligible patients.
  • Contact eligible patients by phone, text, and email.
  • Maintain an online research registry.
  • Maintain social media profiles for the research site.
  • Monitor enrollment targets for multiple studies.
  • Schedule study visits and remind participants about upcoming study visits.
  • Attend community outreach events.
  • Assist with study visits by collecting data from participants, processing participant compensation, and transporting lab samples.

Job Summary

Assists with and adheres to Institutional Review Board (IRB) renewal, modification, and approved protocols. Recruits research subjects and conducts interviews and research assessments.

 Laboratory Technician – 24007473
Dr. Van Tyne Lab

A laboratory technician is needed to assist and support the operations of the Pittsburgh Phage Program, which offers bacteriophage therapy to treat antibiotic-resistant infections in infected patients. The specialist will assist with screening bacterial strains for phage susceptibility, manufacturing phage for clinical use, and processing biospecimens collected from patients who receive this new therapeutic modality.

Key job duties:

  • Performs laboratory testing and some analysis, including organizes, prepares, and tests multiple types of specimen samples.
  • Operates and maintains applicable laboratory equipment for job functions.
  • Keeps detailed, accurate, and timely data and log books. Organizes and documents results.
  • Sterilizes, maintains, and cleans lab equipment; prepares work areas; and maintains cleanliness throughout laboratory.
  • Maintains inventories and assists with ordering proper supplies and chemicals.

Job Summary

 Clinical Research Coordinator – 24005597
Pitt Men’s Study

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified Clinical Research Assistant in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Pitt Men’s Study. The Pitt Men’s Study is a longstanding NIH funded research study on the natural history of HIV/AIDS among gay and bisexual men. Under the guidance and supervision of faculty Principal Investigators and clinical research coordinators, this candidate will participate in all aspects of the planning and implementation of the research study. Duties include contacting/scheduling study participants, conducting study visits and interviews, and collecting data. The Clinical Research Assistant will participate in screening, enrollment and participant follow-up from beginning to end of each study. The incumbent will interact closely with the clinical research team, collect and monitor clinical and laboratory data, and compile and maintain spreadsheets and essential research documents. Candidate should be detail-oriented and possess excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Bachelor’s degree required. Degree in science or health-related field preferred, as is previous experience with clinical research or public health. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted per university guidelines.

The incumbent will be responsible for basic office support tasks.  These tasks could include, but are not limited to, data entry, customer service, filing, front desk reception, and delivering mail.

Moderately developed specific skills, significant work experience and/or completion of related upper-level coursework required. Responsibilities may include data analysis, independent supervision or coordination of programs and/or projects involving complex equipment or analysis of data. Other responsibilities can include regular supervision of other student employees and limited on site supervision.
