We are very pleased to announce that Daria Van Tyne, PhD, has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Medicine, effective August 1, 2024. Dr. Van Tyne joined the Division of Infectious in 2018 at the rank of Assistant Professor. Since joining the ID Division, Dr. Van Tyne has excelled and her laboratory is thriving. She is fully integrated into the Department of Medicine and is an organizing member of both the Center for Innovative Antimicrobial Therapeutics (CIAT) and the Center for Evolutionary Biology and Medicine (CEBaM). Dr. Van Tyne’s research program is perfectly aligned with the broader goals and long-term plans of the Division of Infectious Diseases.
The ID Division’s tripartite mission focuses on conducting impactful research, educating the next generation of clinical and biomedical research trainees, and delivering high-quality care to patients suffering from infections. The research program that Dr. Van Tyne has developed addresses every aspect of this mission. Her work to understand how pathogens evolve during human infection to evade antibiotics and host immune pressures is highly impactful. She has mentored over 25 trainees at all career stages, and has served on advisory committees for an additional 25 trainees. Since arriving at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Van Tyne has also developed a bacteriophage therapy program, which provides personalized cocktails of tailor-made phages for treatment of patients with difficult-to-treat infections.
Those who work with Dr. Van Tyne are struck by her scientific insights, intelligence, and enthusiasm. She is a determined, creative, and talented researcher, educator, and mentor. Since joining the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Van Tyne has established a track record of far-reaching and impactful work, and has identified novel and important research directions to pursue. She is a model for her peers, and is an emerging leader in the fields of microbial genomics, antibiotic resistance, and bacteriophage therapy.
