Pitt ID Pharmacists Publish Study on Improving Access to Medication in JAMA Health Forum

A study recently published in JAMA Health Forum discusses a program aimed at ensuring fairness in the distribution of a scarce, life-saving medication among individuals residing in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in the United States. Lead by Erin McCreary, PharmD, and conducted by scientists and clinicians from the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC, the study demonstrates the feasibility of the program within a large health system.

The analysis suggests that such an approach can enhance equity in access to the medication, particularly for populations disproportionately affected by the disease. However, the study also highlights the need for further efforts in building trust and improving communication with Black patients to ensure they receive these critical medications and other healthcare resources at rates comparable to their white counterparts.
